Ca State 2011
I must say we where going to the Ca state state to support Triple B sporting as they did bring a bunch of shooters to my state shoot a few years ago.
I am very glad that we attended the Ca state shoot.
To start with the prelim Fitasc was set well, no sun issues, targets where all easy to see no eye issues. Targets where there for you to shoot them..
On to the prelim sporting, again targets where all fair and hittable, with the right degree of difficulty for a prelim..
Main Fitasc was shot over the same 2 layouts as the prelim Fitasc was.. On a scale of 1-10 it was a 6 as they really could have done a wee bit more to change the targets.. Layout 2 had a rabbit chandal on it in the prelim and than was made into a ground rabbit but it was only used one time not even on the doubles. Same with layout #1 the same chandal rabbit was used both days, just a little bit of work on the menus would have helped a lot..glad I shot it, it was still a good setup.
Main Sat was a wee bit over the top, with many more shooters under 50 than in the 90's. The targets where hard enough by themselves, than you make them a true pair it was very hard on lower class shooters. If they where trying to make it hard they did a good job. One other thing that makes a big difference is having 12 stands, when you have 5 pair of hard targets and you really do hammer them for 10% of there score. Spreading them over 13-15 stands makes it a wee bit easier to handle. Saying that..the targets where all fair with no eye issues, I think the biggest issue if you where looking for one was the over use of true pairs.
Sun main was a very good way to end the shoot, the targets where way more user friendly with lots of reports and a wee bit closer. The shooters all ended up with a very good time and headed home with a smile on there faces, Saturdays score forgotten. If anything it was a wee bit soft..But to me that was not a issue.. Brad Sutten shot a 99! now that was great shooting I don't care who you are.
The shoot was very well run, with the dusty trails getting watered all day.
score keepers as a whole where good polite and friendly.
I know everyone looks for the negative but sorry to say there was very little that was not good.
Yes they had a few small issues.
Could have used more restrooms on the course
Would have been nice to have 13-14 stands instead of 12, not so many 5 pair stands
Would have been nice to have a Shuttle from 12 to 1 (we had our monster so the first time this year it was not a problem)
Thanks to Bruce Billy Jeff and Jun..

TX State shoot
This shoot was 100x better than last years shoot, hands down. While it was not great it was still very good.
It was very hot and humid but not much that the range could do about that. They had lots of water and gator-aid and snacks on the courses. They did have a shuttle but we only saw it one time. And it was a long walk from 12 to 1.. I also had Tx shooters on our squad that said that ASC was supposed to have more than 12 stands by the TSA standards , so they where not happy with 12 stands.
We do have a small issue with the party on Sat night,,it dragged on and on and finally we just left as we where dirty and smelly. If we had know it would have taken so long we would have showered and than came back,,live and learn.
The Prelim was a trap shooters dream, but in all fairness they had a flat piece of land with no towers so everything was off the ground and the scores showed it, was not a kind event.
5-stand was very fair with a very good mix of targets and a few battues a small tower and rabbits, with not a lot of quartering away.
The Fitasc was not really as good as it could have been, with way to many trap type targets, with some over the top targets very edgy and some silly to easy ones, really not a whole lot of imagination, 1 & 2 layouts I thought where not bad, but 3 & 4 where not so good.

US Open
This is how to run a shoot. It was very well run rain and all. They had more food on fri and sat night than you could shake a stick at.
Fitasc was well done with a good mix of targets and nothing over the top. It was a good mix of fun things like par# 3 had 6 traps and some of the par's had 5 singles on each peg. The targets where all fair with no edgy hard to see targets. The sm gauge Fitasc was a big hit with the shooters and sounds like it should be in shoots to come.
5-stand was also well done, with a few over the top, the chondell off the tower and with the wind it was a bit over the top, not sure why they used a on edge rabbit on the 1st layout? But as a whole targets where set with a line.
Prelim, main and masters cup, where all to me very brutal, and why I say that is that most of the stands had small windows where you did not see the traps and to me it was very hard to get a line and see a site picture because when you saw the target it was all ready doing something and going like a bat away from you. The good stuff is that they used lots of towers and battues and chandals , But I have a major issues with using on edge rabbits going away. I have a very hard time with this type of target, Mike Wilgus and Bill M shot in front of us and they shot very well, Vandy adapted well I had real issues and they really killed my self-confidence. It seems that alot of shooters had the same issues I had. I understand why they did what they did because they needed to move shooters along.
As a whole it was a very good experience and I will need to learn how to shoot that type of target before I would go back.

Better Pic of where we shot from |
We shot the prelim on fri..It was raining for the 1st flight and the wind came up big time for the second (which we shot) the rain came back for the third flight,,by than we where warm and dry.
I must say I would have liked to shoot these targets without the weather.. Bill had a very nice mix but the wind really did a number on a bunch of the targets. He had the targets showing face or belly, only thing he was a wee bit heavy on the teal. Bill looked at me and smiled and shrugged his shoulders as to say what can you do.
We shot the Fitasc on Sat 8am in the rain and wind, even in the crappy weather the targets really where good, the only thing I can say is that on all the layouts the targets kind of all want to the middle. Sunday the weather got better and so did our shooting. Layout four had a wicked battue coming from left to right from behind a tree around forty yards out and a chondell on the right side going away, along with a slow 20yard left to right 108 that died almost in front of you.. Tricky and frustrating, I was kicking myself when I was leaving.
Main event.
We shot the green course on Sat..Wow to me it was brutal..I was impressed with the scores that came in. To me stand one with the high right to left crosser and on report a rabbit going mach 5 left to right into high grass was not good,, I think if Bill had the bunny first it would have been a way better stand. and other stand was stand 7 with a true pair of going away trap targets at 25 and 35 yards, was over the top and could have been a report pair it would have been kinder to the lower class shooters. I was surprised at the stands that had the black or bottom of chandel to the shooter.
Having said all of that I wonder how we would have fared if we shot the green on Sunday with nice weather.
We shot the gold on sunday and it was like the prelim a good mix and fun to shoot, nothing over the top just good targets, I think if we where to shoot gold on Sat in the rain I would still think the same way.
5-stand had one single and two true pair on each stand..not my favorite way to throw it.. And you could shoot it Sat or Sun, as it was only a 50 target event. So most of the big name shooters shot it on Sun when the weather was better..In a big shoot like this it really should have been a 100 targets.
Things that may make us think twice before coming back.
Green course was really not usable, as they knew it was going to rain and really did not rise to the occasion.
The green course or the Fitasc had no shuttle, it was heck of a walk to get from stand 15 over to stand one. And it really was just as long to get out to Fitasc. There was staff driving all over with six place carts not sure what they where doing but they had no interest in giving us a ride.
We travel to a lot of shoots and it really is unfair to make shooters rent a cart. We where told to park in front, where we first entered the club what a walk that would have been. We drove to the end of the skeet fields and walked from there.
No maps of the club,, first time we have ever seen that.
Hotel we stayed at the Baymont,,no hot water in the mornings and the place was under major remodel and really should not have been open. Live and learn.
Glad we where there, as a whole very good, but will need help for us to come back.
It was I little wet LOL |
Browning/Briely
Rain Rain go away. LOL OK we did get wet feet on Sat of the shoot but the People at Cajun Elite did a great job of getting everyone done with the main event.
The 5-stand not so much, not sure how many shooters did not get to shoot? I know our group had to quite shooting Sat night as it was to dark, we where told that score keepers would be ready for us at 7:30 am.. the bad thing was no one must have told the score keepers, as they did not show up until 7:45 and we had to shoot Fitasc at 8am so it was a rush and more less a waste of time.
Fitasc layouts 1&2 fun to shoot, 3&4 I was a wee bit confused as # 4 had 2 90mm traps a rabbit and a battue and # 3 all standard targets. (not sure if anyone but me took notice) I think you could have mixed them up and had a better balance.
Prelim and main targets where all fair targets, a wee bit edgy but I think it was the best you could do with the traps they have. They had put some work and thought into the targets, the skipping battue over the water was fun, but it was kind of inconsistent.. but I think fair for the shooters. Anthony had some small ponds and a little terrain to work with, but he had to deal with some very flat land and did a good job with it. He had lots of battues, rabbits, and 90s as well as chandells mixed in, like salt a little is good and to much ruins the food, they used just the right amount. Anthony did not use a over amount of quartering targets other than a few of the rabbits. As a whole it was a good mix.
Lunch was free for the shooters all three days, thank you! someone is listening LOL, Not sure why they charged for the drinks for lunch? oh well.
But they did have some small issues, and I must say small.
There was no shuttles on any of the courses, at lest we did not see any, maybe next year?
the Score keepers on the prelim really needed more training.
There was no water on the prelim but it was taken care of asap
Most stands did not have anyplace to sit down.
The Food for Sat night looked good, but we really did not wish to sit out side as we had wet feet and it was getting cold out (that was not the clubs fault just a fact)
Before we hit the road to head back to NV I thanked the owner for a job well done and I meant it.
As a whole it was a very good shoot and we will be putting it on the must shoot for 012. Oh and we will be taking our rubber boots along!

Birds Landing Turkey Shoot
Well 2010 Birds shoot dates are over, we always have fun, they always get a good turn out of shooters, this last shoot was the same, Sun was a bit of a issue but everyone had to shoot it. Birds did a good job of changing up the targets, and they put a lot of work in the prizes turkey and all the fix-ens, thanks guys it was fun see you next year.
Sure there still where a few targets that where edgy, on the red course on stand #2 and #4 with the rabbit. I think stand #1 should have been a report pair. But way better than it has been.in the last few years.
The weather was something that can not be controlled. Yes the Fitasc was bad if you got unlucky to shoot it on Thursday/Friday. We shot it on Sat and Sun and I must say I really liked the targets. (But no North wind)
I shot the 28ga on Thursday and the wind really killed the targets moving them out 30+ yards giving us no chance on anything.
I did not shoot the 5-stand but it did look fair,,there was one pair of going away trapish targets on like stand number 3 that was a wee bit over the top.
The K-Cup was 50% good 50% hard to see, at the time we shot.(10:30) Stand #1 - #6 good fun no eye contests. #7 -#13 not so much fun targets in shadows edgy not easy to see.
Now for the main
Orange was our favorite, Red ( even with stand 1-2 &4) Green, than Yellow, Really Orange #1 and than all the other 3 are all about the same.It is hard for me to remember any of the targets on yellow, but I can tell you almost every target on the other 3 courses.
Yes it was 15 targets more difficult than last year. I see a few things like each setter is trying to impress and not giving the shooters anything, I mean in the 40 stands in 4 days there was not one single stand that you walked into and without thinking ran all 6 or 8 targets.
Each stand had as a whole, real targets. A few with some distance or a tower or speed or a soft teal, you had to be on your toes the whole time, if not it was very easy to dibble away a target or 3 on each stand.
Brad Kidd shot very well to win, very good shooting Brad.
I have heard they will be trying to soften up the targets, I hope they don't.
New style Fitasc next year, great but I really don't want to shoot all 100 in a row, I will see whats up with that.
What do you think?
AZ State at Ben Avery
Birds Lands Oct & Sept monthly Shoots
Rick and Dan do a very good job at Birds very month, The Oct (FFA) shoot was set on the soft side, which was good, all targets fair, but a lot of trap and quartering targets but the shooters all had a good time. It really brings to light the targets that we need to work on, the Soft quick type targets, our group from Nv all have issues being consistent with these targets and it seems to be a real stranded in shoots we are going to this year.
The Sept shoot was windy so the scores where down, they did have the rabbit stand (13) that was really a not well thought out stand.
Top Gun Shoot Mount Vernon
what can I say.. Thus was a great shoot, Jayson from Briley sett 1/2 the targets and I set the other 1/2. 350 shooters and everyone had a great time.. even on Sat in the rain. Big trees big rocks and a big Mt made to order for sporting.
Oregon State shoot
Oregon was a lot of fun. The shoot was at Michell's Clay sports. I must say it was run well, scorers and everyone was friendly. I know they had a small hitch in the 5-stand om Sunday, I was told that the targets where sett to a different set of menus.
The grounds are a wee bit small, so the had a lot of quick quartering targets, Dan had brought Brooks in from Western Wings in ID.
Brooks is new to setting targets and when new setters run out of ideas they throw trap/quartering targets with a skeet target or report.
We where glad that we want, we meet many new shooters, Vandy likes to meet all the lady shooters she can. It was nice to see all of our old friends as well
TX State Shoot At Hill Country Shooting sports in Kerville
The targets for the prelim where very soft..
The targets on the main as a whole where all quartering away targets, I would say 60%..
The Fitasc was just ok.. very little spring on anything..
I was very disappointed as a whole..we came a long way to shoot big targets that Tx was supposed to have the market on.. Not targets where the traps where 5-10 yards away going away.. I would say that out of the 30 stands on the main 10 where good.. Take stand 1 on Black course, they have a high lift and what did they do with it? a fast quartering away..
The 5-stand was the main reason I don't shoot 5-stand.. targets in the sun, pairs the where almost imposable to see. The traps with numbers in no order or you could not see the numbers,, I was going to drop out when I saw it in the morning but I was talked into shooting it.. I was very sorry I did.
All the staff was great!!!! Jack and Deb want over the top to get us signed in, thank you very much!! The food was all good..We did not stay for the Sat night fish fry not sure how it was,, no one said anything.....
pullers where all very good,, even as they had to do the I-clays new scoring system.. It may be good for posting scores But as a shooter in 95+ weather it was very very slow. 3 + hours ea day. In saying that traps all worked well and the events we where in where on time.
As a whole I am glad we came to the shoot,, to be part of history is kind of cool. The 28ga was fun to shoot as we shot it just for fun.
Brian H the Winner was in the group behind us..he shot very well congrats to him!!!! and I shot with M Wampler who Won the ladies Fitasc very good shooting young lady.
We would like to come back next year..we will see where it is going to be.
And just so you know I would tell this to Jacks face and I will post my name.. I hope this is taken in a way to help next years state shoot, not as sour grapes
Ca State warm up At Birds Landing
The only issue they had was the big tower in the open field on the other side of the railroad tracks.
The long tower shot was very good which was the 2nd target, the first target was a soft crosser that was affected by the wind and it was anywhere from 20 to 80 yards away.. So the issue I have is that a good shooter may get all of the long target which is a good shot but get ripped by the wind. where as lower class shooter may miss all the long targts and get a break with the wind and walk off with the same score as the upper class without ever hitting a long target. All they would have to have done is move the 1st target in towards the shooter which lets the lower class hit 1/2 of the targets and the upper class would hit a 5 or 6 and that would be a good score. As I said it was a good shoot and will be back.

Tournaments reviews
I always like shooting at Birds and last week was no different. Weather was to die for. Targets where all fair and hittable and no eye contests.
Some of the stands I liked where stand 12 off the little platform where there was a green full size from left to right quartering away with a blk full size coming out from the bottom right of the platform.
I always like the overheads they throw and this week they had 3 stands with them.
As much as I like shooting at Birds there a few things that I would love to see.
1st add a few more specialty targets they only have the one rabbit they could use a
Sunday April 18th Raahauges Ca
The Place is very Green and rustic in a good way. The sporting range is up a big valley.
Lots of room to throw targets.
1st I was looking forward to shooting this shoot as I have heard good things about the place and the targets.
Yes I know the traps they use give them the helping hand in getting into the sport. But it is very frustrating when the targets are in a different spot each time.
I was a wee bit disappointed.
First the good
there where some neat targets, stand 1 was good it could have been a report pair.
The stand with the rabbit was good, fun and fair
stand 5 and 6 where both very good, but the bad thing was you could not shoot them at the same time. The true pair going up the hill was fun and way different than anything else on the course.
Now the not so good
I must say I have never been to a shoot where there was as many targets coming into the viewing shooting area of your shooting stand.
Stand 5 and 6 could not be shot at the same time.
stands nine ten eleven and twelve all had targets coming into view at one pont in time.
For me there was to many true pair, but in all fairness I see the a lot. I just am not a big believer in making the shooter shoot one target quickly and have the second target dropping
The last negative thing I have to say is that a good number of targets where dropping ether on the second shot or both of the coming down the hills. It does not give the shooter a fair shot at the target as the wind will affect a target more dropping with out any power.
Will I go back.. Right after the shoot I said no. But the more I think about it and with my wife and friends telling me to give it a 2nd chance.
So yes I will be back.
It is a friendly place and we will see you there for the next shoot.
