My views on Tournaments I attended
I will not post anything on this page that I would not say to the Target setters Face

2013 shoots

Got to shoot at Tri-counties up in OR it was a two day shoot and had a good time targets where fair and really challenging.
On my way home from OR this fall I stopped and shot at Cottage Grove OR fun and fair got lucky and I was HOA with a 91
Next weekend we headed over to Ca to shoot at CHHP for the rib-eye shoot and I was lucky and was HOA with a 88
We finished off the shooting Quail Point in Ca for their Crab feed..It was a real blast LOL Vandy and I both shot 89 high was a 94..It was a very good shoot. if you missed to bad it was great and tons of fun!!

Did I say that she won the shoot off!
Matt did a very good job setting the targets! A very good mix of crossing incoming true pair and 2 shot single. I had a good time shooting it even as I only shot a 83 high was a 92. Please please try and do everything you can do to make QP shoots next year.

Dave's view of the 2011 Nationals

Main event
Orange: my favorite of the 4 courses, targets where all fair with one separator stand (1)
We shot it Saturday at 8 am with no wind, sun was not a issue at any time

Green: we shot it Sunday at 10:30 so wind and sun where not a issue. Again all targets where fair with the separator stand (5) but I can see where wind would and did affect these targets

Yellow:We shot it at 1:00 Thursday, targets on the soft side but not overly so. Targets where all fair.
We started ½ hour late, and had lots of backups..not real sure why? but had a high % of no birds for what ever reason. Again I could see where there would be issues with the north wind, like stand 7 the two incoming targets and 9 and 10.. we where done shooting before the wind came up.

Red: We shot Friday at 3:30 this was my least liked course. In all fairness it was windy and getting cooler and the sun was starting to be a issue as we shot.
I did have a issue with stand 9 with the true pair of rabbit and bird, with only one tree on that whole part of the course, something could and should have been done with the bird even if only making it a report pair. Same with stand 4 (I think) with the true pair orange from the left and the black from the right, if it was a report it would have been more of a fair stand..Not sure if the wind made these two stands unfair, but as I watched many shooters never get there 2nd shot off... something needed to be changed.

K-Cup: We shot it Friday at 10:30 wind was steady from the north. The targets where by far softer than
anything I have ever shot on the K-cup before. All the targets where fair and no eye contests so that was all good. I really don't know if we need to keep it soft or go back to making it a wee bit stiffer?
I think we should see what the results of the shooter replays are.

Fitasc: The shooters I talked with, most who did not know me, some who did, liked the new style about 3-1. Mostly because they did not like the 4 hour time it took to shoot it. But When I told them really how many shooters where able to shoot the new compared to the old most understood.

Looking back this is a list of what I have that may help for next year.

1st: 50/50 Thursday/Friday or Saturday/Sunday..most shooters seemed to think that would help with running out of gas before they where done with all 4 layouts

2nd (this idea was already used by some of the referees) Use/train the loaders and the relief referees to help on the 1st peg of each layout to call up next squad and mark Fitasc line on shooters.

3rd If I am able to set the Fitasc next year I would like to be the course manager and head referee

4th Maybe go to 15 min instead of 13 min?

5th we may want to look at starting the Fitasc on Tuesday and ending it on Saturday?
Sunday had a small amount of shooters which we could have handled with ½ the amount of referees. This way we would be able to work out any kinks we may have, which this year was worked out on wed with the highest amount of shooters we had all week.
The biggest issue really was getting the referees to understand the time frame to keep shooters moving.
As I said before the head referee and the relief referee's should be helping to get things started and to keep them moving.

                            Ca State 2011
I must say we where going to the Ca state state to support Triple B sporting as they did bring a bunch of shooters to my state shoot a few years ago.
I am very glad that we attended the Ca state shoot.
To start with the prelim Fitasc was set well, no sun issues, targets where all easy to see no eye issues. Targets where there for you to shoot them..
On to the prelim sporting, again targets where all fair and hittable, with the right degree of difficulty for a prelim..
Main Fitasc was shot over the same 2 layouts as the prelim Fitasc was.. On a scale of 1-10 it was a 6 as they really could have done a wee bit more to change the targets.. Layout 2 had a rabbit chandal on it in the prelim and than was made into a ground rabbit but it was only used one time not even on the doubles. Same with layout #1 the same chandal rabbit was used both days, just a little bit of work on the menus would have helped a lot..glad I shot it, it was still a good setup.
Main Sat was a wee bit over the top, with many more shooters under 50 than in the 90's. The targets where hard enough by themselves,  than you make them a true pair it was very hard on lower class shooters. If they where trying to make it hard they did a good job. One other thing that makes a big difference is having 12 stands, when you have 5 pair of hard targets and you really do hammer them for 10% of there score. Spreading them over 13-15 stands makes it a wee bit easier to handle. Saying that..the targets where all fair with no eye issues, I think the biggest issue if you where looking for one was the over use of true pairs.
Sun main was a very good way to end the shoot, the targets where way more user friendly with lots of reports and a wee bit closer. The shooters all ended up with a very good time and headed home with a smile on there faces, Saturdays score forgotten. If anything it was a wee bit soft..But to me that was not a issue.. Brad Sutten shot a 99! now that was great shooting I don't care who you are.
The shoot was very well run, with the dusty trails getting watered all day.
score keepers as a whole where good polite and friendly.
I know everyone looks for the negative but sorry to say there was very little that was not good.
Yes they had a few small issues.
Could have used more restrooms on the course
Would have been nice to have 13-14 stands instead of 12, not so many 5 pair stands
Would have been nice to have a Shuttle from 12 to 1 (we had our monster so the first time this year it was not a problem)
Thanks to Bruce Billy Jeff and Jun..

TX State shoot

This shoot was 100x better than last years shoot, hands down. While it was not great it was still very good.
It was very hot and humid but not much that the range could do about that. They had lots of water and gator-aid and snacks on the courses.  They did have a shuttle but we only saw it one time. And it was a long walk from 12 to 1.. I also had Tx shooters on our squad that said that ASC was supposed to have more than 12 stands by the TSA standards , so they where not happy with 12 stands.
We do have a small issue with the party on Sat night,,it dragged on and on and finally we just left as we where dirty and smelly. If we had know it would have taken so long we would have showered and than came back,,live and learn.
The Prelim was a trap shooters dream, but in all fairness they had a flat piece of land with no towers so everything was off the ground and the scores showed it, was not a kind event.
5-stand was very fair with a very good mix of targets and a few battues a small tower and rabbits, with not a lot of quartering away.
The Fitasc was not really as good as it could have been, with way to many trap type targets, with some over the top targets very edgy and some silly to easy ones, really not a whole lot of imagination, 1 & 2 layouts I thought where not bad, but 3 & 4 where not so good.
The winner of the US open

Prelim of fri

Lots of shooters

Did I say lots of shooters
The main was really a very good set of targets on both courses a very good mix with and little of everything. I heard some talk about trees/bushes being in the way,,not sure if that was a issue. But for me trying to get my feet back under me after the Open I was very happy with them. If you only shot one event the main was the one for you.

US Open

This is how to run a shoot. It was very well run rain and all. They had more food on fri and sat night than you could shake a stick at.
Fitasc was well done with a good mix of targets and nothing over the top. It was a good mix of fun things like par# 3 had 6 traps and some of the par's had 5 singles on each peg. The targets where all fair with no edgy hard to see targets. The sm gauge Fitasc was a big hit with the shooters and sounds like it should be in shoots to come.
5-stand was also well done, with a few over the top, the chondell off the tower and with the wind it was a bit over the top, not sure why they used a on edge rabbit on the 1st layout? But as a whole targets where set with a line.
Prelim, main and masters cup, where all to me very brutal, and why I say that is that most of the stands had small windows where you did not see the traps and to me it was very hard to get a line and see a site picture because when you saw the target it was all ready doing something and going like a bat away from you. The good stuff is that they used lots of towers and battues and chandals , But I have a major issues with using on edge rabbits going away.   I have a very hard time with this type of target, Mike Wilgus and Bill M shot in front of us and they shot very well, Vandy adapted well I had real issues and they really killed my self-confidence. It seems that alot of shooters had the same issues I had. I understand why they did what they did because they needed to move shooters along.
As a whole it was a very good experience and I will need to learn how to shoot that type of target before I would go back.

 The Delta Classic Fall shoot

To be fair, I will try and make my commits as unbiased as I can.. even as I shot my worst score in 20+ years of shooting.
Not sure what shoot some of the posters are talking about or what shoot they where at?

First lets talk about the good points..

2 courses for main event!and they used them!! Did not try and cram all shooters into one course to save cost :D
small ga had there own course
Food was priced fair and fine to eat.. :D
Parking was fine ((We did not bring a cart so no issue with paying to park))
Each stand had how many pairs and if it was true or report printed and posted. :)
Lots of room to sit and relax in the metal shed and under a big tent :)
Lots of practice areas
The trappers from Bruce's School was great as always
Fitasc reffs where very good and seemed to care and knew the rules, good to see :)
Price of Rem shells where good and the guy helped carry them to our car. :)

Now for the not so good,, and not really that hard to fix

No shuttles..We where told we had to rent a cart, that it was to far to walk, this is so wrong..We flew in, so we are already spending big bucks. They dropped the ball big time here, as everyone in our group preferred to walk, but the club is so big it would not work..
Even if we could have driven to the course and parked it would have been fine..They had lots of room for us to do that (Like we where able to do at the Mardi Gras shoot in March)..As many people as they had walking around doing what?? One kid was standing by the dumpster all day Saturday. They really could have had 2 shuttles.
SO to fix this  !!
A) Get Shuttles
B) Let us drive to the venues
C) Raise price $5-$10 give everyone a free cart

Traps not signed
Which trap is A and which is B?
What kind target is that target? Battue? 90? rabbit?
So to fix this
Write on the menus the kind of target it is..not really the hard

Big Banquet Sat Night
Not sure how it was as no one we talked with attended it.
We would have stayed, but we where done shooting at 3:30 and where told the dinner would not start till 7pm even tho the tickets said 6pm, so we where not going to stay around for 3:30 hours, and as the dive as way to long to drive to hotel and than come back, and it would have been way to late for us to drive back
So to fix this
A) start it at 5PM
B) give free food during the day and do away with Banquet

Burning Rice straw while the shoot is going on. As they say on ESPN
COME ON MAN!!!

Trappers other than the ILL kids really needed more training, they where nice kids but clueless..we helped them understand and they seemed to do fine after..

Yes there was a gun rack at each stand but no place to sit. not a chair or bench anywhere.

Targets
As I said before not sure what shoot some]of the poster's where at.. but lets look at the scores
Main event
40 out of 244 shooters shot under 50%
White 0-shooters shot in the 90's
Blue 8-shooters in the 90's

Prelim
15 out of 132 shooters under 50%
0-Scores in the 90's

Fitasc
13 out of 88 shooters under 50%
2 shooters in the 90's
How much fun did all the shooters who shot less than 50% have?

Ok yes it was windy, But lets be real? all shooting stands in a straight line shooting over a ditch! (As one post said the Great ditch open ) With one trap in the ditch and one stand with a high lift..
The wind issue..We where listening to the weather for 3 days before the shoot and they said all along that it was going to be windy and which way it was going to come from..so wouldn't you would think about setting the targets to take the wind into account?

Shooters this is MY OPINION ONLY!!!!
If the trap is all ready 40 + yards away and the wind takes it over 80 yards away.. that is not a good target, it not a challenging target, it is not a fair target it is a dumb target..
If you throw a target into the wind and it comes back and lands on the road you are shooting from..that is not a good target it is not a fair target it is a total UNSAFE TARGET and you throw out the stand..Sometimes you bite the bullet and do the right safe thing.

Lots of things they did where kind of over the top..Like the instant scoring..Delta Bucks and the do or die (make a break want to be)
I Still have not figured out the TV thing..
Yes it is a great idea but I have never seen anything on the web page..I have not looked today sorry.
It seems they are doing the same thing Trigger Sports is doing..why not just bring trigger sports in and save a ton of money instead of reinventing the wheel?
Yes it is also great that they gave away big money..But if it is not fun it will be hard to get shooters to come back.
And the place is very hard to get to. 3 hours south of Little Rock.
Main event

All shot off a road on top of levy

Better Pic of where we shot from
I really think if they spend some money and hired a shoot manager with some experience and they listen to him or her that 99% of the issues would go away. There is a reason the US Open only goes to experienced clubs,, try running some small shoots first, learn what to do good or bad..no business takes off running, they start small work the kinks out and then get bigger, Remember you only get one chance to make a first impression, and ours and lots of others impression was not so good.

I hope I was Fair in my assessment of the shoot, I am not sore about shooting bad, It is what it is, just not happy with a lot of small things, And with the amount of money they have spent it could be so much better.

 Gamaliel Cup

What is it this year? Every place we go it rains, I am starting to get a complex. This time the wet feet was brought on by me leaving my nice rubber boots in dry NV.
First the targets which where sett by Bill McGuire.
We shot the prelim on fri..It was raining for the 1st flight and the wind came up big time for the second (which we shot) the rain came back for the third flight,,by than we where warm and dry.
I must say I would have liked to shoot these targets without the weather.. Bill had a very nice mix but the wind really did a number on a bunch of the targets. He had the targets showing face or belly, only thing he was a wee bit heavy on the teal.  Bill looked at me and smiled and shrugged his shoulders as to say what can you do.
We shot the Fitasc on Sat 8am in the rain and wind, even in the crappy weather the targets really where good, the only thing I can say is that on all the layouts the targets kind of all want to the middle. Sunday the weather got better and so did our shooting. Layout four had a wicked battue coming from left to right from behind a tree around forty yards out and a chondell on the  right side going away, along with a slow 20yard left to right  108 that  died almost in front of you.. Tricky and frustrating, I was kicking myself  when I was leaving.
Main event.

We shot the green course on Sat..Wow to me it was brutal..I was impressed with the scores that came in. To me stand one with the high right to left crosser and on report a rabbit going mach 5 left to right into high grass was not good,, I think if Bill had the bunny first it would have been a way better stand. and other stand was stand 7 with a true pair of going away trap targets at 25 and 35 yards, was over the top and could have been a report pair it would have been kinder to the lower class shooters. I was surprised at the stands that had the black or bottom of  chandel to the shooter.
Having said all of that I wonder how we would have fared if we shot the green on Sunday with nice weather.
We shot the gold on sunday and it was like the prelim a good mix and fun to shoot, nothing over the top just good targets, I think if we where to shoot gold on Sat in the rain I would still think the same way.
5-stand  had one single and two true pair on each stand..not my favorite way to throw it.. And you could shoot it Sat or Sun, as it was only a 50 target event. So most of the big name shooters shot it on Sun when the weather was better..In a big shoot like this it really should have been a 100 targets.

Things that may make us think twice before coming back.
Green course was really not usable, as they knew it was going to rain and really did not rise to the occasion.
The green course or the Fitasc had no shuttle, it was heck of a walk to get from stand 15 over to stand one. And it really was just as long to get out to Fitasc. There was staff driving all over with six place carts not sure what they where doing but they had no interest in giving us a ride.
We travel to a lot of shoots and it really is unfair to make shooters rent a cart. We where told to park in front, where we first entered the club what a walk that would have been. We drove to the end of the skeet fields and walked from there.
No maps of the club,, first time we have ever seen that.
Hotel we stayed at the Baymont,,no hot water in the mornings and the place was under major remodel and really should not have been open. Live and learn.
Glad we where there, as a whole very good, but will need help for us to come back.

It was I little wet LOL

Browning/Briely
Rain Rain go away. LOL OK we did get wet feet on Sat of the shoot but the People at Cajun Elite did a great job of getting everyone done with the main event.
The 5-stand not so much, not sure how many shooters did not get to shoot? I know our group had to quite shooting Sat night as it was to dark, we where told that score keepers would be ready for us at 7:30 am.. the bad thing was no one must have told the score keepers, as they did not show up until 7:45 and we had to shoot Fitasc at 8am so it was a rush and more less a waste of time.
Fitasc layouts 1&2 fun to shoot, 3&4 I was a wee bit confused as # 4 had 2 90mm traps  a rabbit and a battue and # 3 all standard targets. (not sure if anyone but me took notice) I think you could have mixed them up and had a better balance.
Prelim and main targets where all fair targets, a wee bit edgy but I think it was the best you could do with the traps they have. They had put some work and thought into the targets, the skipping battue over the water was fun, but it was kind of inconsistent.. but I think fair for the shooters. Anthony had some small ponds and a little terrain to work with, but he had to deal with some very flat land  and did a good job with it. He had lots of battues, rabbits, and 90s as well as chandells mixed in, like salt a little is good and to much ruins the food, they used just the right amount.  Anthony did not use a over amount of quartering targets other than a few of the rabbits. As a whole it was a good mix.
Lunch was free for the shooters all three days, thank you! someone is listening LOL, Not sure why they charged for the drinks for lunch? oh well.

But they did have some small issues, and I must say small.
There was no shuttles on any of the courses, at lest we did not see any, maybe next year?
the Score keepers on the prelim really needed more training.
There was no water on the prelim but it was taken care of asap
Most stands did not have anyplace to sit down.
The Food for Sat night looked good, but we really did not wish to sit out side as we had wet feet and it was getting cold out (that was not the clubs fault just a fact)

Before we hit the road to head back to NV I thanked the owner for a job well done and I meant it.
As a whole it was a very good shoot and we will be putting it on the must shoot for 012. Oh and we will be taking our rubber boots along!

3+ inches in a few hours

They had to throw this stand out

But we did get to shoot this one

First Shoot of 2011 AZ Open

Wow what a great way to start the shooting Year!! I must say our group of shooters that came from NV had a great time!
The reason we shoot is to enjoy the targets and we really enjoyed Tim Miles targets, They where not cake by any means, but they where all in the air with a line and a great mix, and only if I remember right 2 quartering targets in the main over two days. Prelim was the same great mix.
I had to give Tim a hard time about not having any rabbits on the main or prelim, but he told me that the plant life takes so long to grow in that part of the world he did not want to shoot or bulldoze over any of it, I will buy that, but Time said he will have bunnys by the Dec shoot.
The Fitasc was fun to shoot with no short windows or nuts distance. We had the pleasure of shooting with Brad Kidd he rang up a 96 it was fun to watch. I will say that the Fitasc refs where new shooter user friendly.
100 straight by Gebben was just great shooting!!! When I was done with Sat I thought maybe 95-96 after all there where some of the US top shooters there, but 100 wow is all I can say!!
Look at the rest of the scores and you will see how great that shooting really was.
Not sure if we will be able to make the AZ state but we will be back in Dec.
This was the easiest review I have ever done all good no issues that I saw
Thanks for the good time

Birds Landing  Turkey Shoot

Well 2010 Birds shoot dates are over, we always have fun, they always get a good turn out of shooters, this last shoot was the same, Sun was a bit of a issue but everyone had to shoot it. Birds did a good job of changing up the targets, and they put a lot of work in the prizes turkey and all the fix-ens,  thanks guys it was fun see you next year.

Nat SA TX 2010

If you missed this shoot you missed the best Nat in all the years I have been going down to.
Some shooting have been whining that the targets where to hard, I will say they where a wee bit more than all the other years I have been shooting in Tx.
Sure there still where a few targets that where edgy, on the red course on stand #2 and #4 with the rabbit. I think stand #1 should have been a report pair. But way better than it has been.in the last few years.
The weather was something that can not be controlled. Yes the Fitasc was bad if you got unlucky to shoot it on Thursday/Friday. We shot it on Sat and Sun and I must say I really liked the targets. (But no North wind)
I shot the 28ga on Thursday and the wind really killed the targets moving them out 30+ yards giving us no chance on anything.
I did not shoot the 5-stand but it did look fair,,there was one pair of going away trapish targets on like stand number 3 that was a wee bit over the top.
The K-Cup was 50% good 50% hard to see, at the time we shot.(10:30) Stand #1 - #6 good fun no eye contests. #7 -#13 not so much fun  targets in shadows edgy not easy to see.
 Now for the main
Orange was our favorite, Red ( even with stand 1-2 &4) Green, than Yellow, Really Orange #1 and than all the other 3 are all about the same.It is hard for me to remember any of the targets on yellow, but I can tell you almost every target on the other 3 courses.
Yes it was 15 targets more difficult than last year. I see a few things like each setter is trying to impress and not giving the shooters anything, I mean in the 40 stands in 4 days there was not one single stand that you walked into and without thinking ran all 6 or 8 targets.
Each stand had as a whole, real targets. A few with some distance or a tower or speed or a soft teal, you had to be on your toes the whole time, if not it was very easy to dibble away a target or 3 on each stand.
Brad Kidd shot very well to win, very good shooting Brad.
I have heard they will be trying to soften up the targets, I hope they don't.
New style Fitasc next year, great but I really don't want to shoot all 100 in a row, I will see whats up with that.
What do you think?

AZ State at Ben Avery
Wow what a shoot.

The people who run BA are very very friendly :D , Score keepers very good and friendly,
Boy it was warm..Ok so it was Hot  , 107 Sat 106 Sun, but BA kept the ice cold bottled water coming. And really the club can't control the weather.
The course we shot on Sat was the Rattle Snake, it to me was the better of the two, but to be fair I did shoot it better.
They had some good targets on it, but it had way more targets that where edgy and black, And I mean black and edgy and low and very much a eye contest. And my big pet peeve is lots and lots of quartering away targets.
Sunday we shot the road runner course and again more quartering and edgy black add in some over the top distance targets (yes I did watch Zack hit them, but I was the only one in 2 squads to hit one.)
Fitasc was really the same targets on all four layouts, with edgy targets and some very low shots and everything coming to the middle ( they had a few fun targets the rabbit and the 90 on par 3 was good)
It was 107 and they had no shuttle from stand 12 to stand one,(we did get a ride on Sun which was very helpful)
I still like it when the club does away with the Sat night dinner and just give the shooters food during the day, after being in 107 plus all day, we just wanted to get to a shower and some AC.
I did not shoot the 5-stand.
As a group we wanted to see the club that was holding the Zone shoot in 2011, see what kind of targets they threw.
The general feeling was the reason we shoot is for fun and for good targets, sorry when lots of shooters are in the 50's they are not having fun. I hate to say it but this shoot will hurt the turn out for the zone.
And the bottom line is that the targets where very close to being good

1) add some color to the targets that do not make it to the sky
2) they have nice traps use the tilt give the shooters some face or belly
3) some of the targets would have been fine as a report pair but not as a true pair
4) Same with the Fitasc, trying to beat the shooters with one peg of the same targets but 15/20 yards farther
5) you really don't have to try and beat the shooters on very stand
6) no out of state concurrent trophies, shame you, you had 2 in state ladies and 8 out of state????

I am not writing this to be mean or because of sour grapes, just hoping that they take some free advice. I would not write anything that I would not tell them to their face.

Birds Lands Oct & Sept monthly Shoots
Rick and Dan do a very good job at Birds very month, The Oct (FFA) shoot was set on the soft side, which was good, all targets fair, but a lot of trap and quartering targets but the shooters all had a good time. It really brings to light the targets that we need to work on, the Soft quick type targets, our group from Nv all have issues being consistent with these targets and  it seems to be a real stranded in shoots we are going to this year.
The Sept shoot was windy so the scores where down, they did have the rabbit stand (13) that was really a not well thought out stand.

Top Gun Shoot Mount Vernon
what can I say.. Thus was a great shoot, Jayson from Briley sett 1/2 the targets and I set the other 1/2. 350 shooters and everyone had a great time.. even on Sat in the rain. Big trees big rocks and a big Mt made to order for sporting.

 Oregon State shoot
Oregon was a lot of fun. The shoot was at Michell's Clay sports. I must say it was run well, scorers and everyone was friendly. I know they had a small hitch in the 5-stand om Sunday, I was told that the targets where sett to a different set of menus.
The grounds are a wee bit small, so the had a lot of quick quartering targets, Dan had brought Brooks in from Western Wings in ID.
Brooks is new to setting targets and when new setters run out of ideas they throw trap/quartering targets with a skeet target or report.
We where glad that we want, we meet many new shooters, Vandy likes to meet all the lady shooters she can. It was nice to see all of our old friends as well
TX State Shoot At Hill Country Shooting sports in Kerville
The targets for the prelim where very soft..
The targets on the main as a whole where all quartering away targets, I would say 60%..
The Fitasc was just ok.. very little spring on anything..
I was very disappointed as a whole..we came a long way to shoot big targets that Tx was supposed to have the market on.. Not targets where the traps where 5-10 yards away going away.. I would say that out of the 30 stands on the main 10 where good.. Take stand 1 on Black course, they have a high lift and what did they do with it? a fast quartering away..
The 5-stand was the main reason I don't shoot 5-stand.. targets in the sun, pairs the where almost imposable to see. The traps with numbers in no order or you could not see the numbers,, I was going to drop out when I saw it in the morning but I was talked into shooting it.. I was very sorry I did.
All the staff was great!!!! Jack and Deb want over the top to get us signed in, thank you very much!! The food was all good..We did not stay for the Sat night fish fry not sure how it was,, no one said anything.....
pullers where all very good,, even as they had to do the I-clays new scoring system.. It may be good for posting scores But as a shooter in 95+ weather it was very very slow. 3 + hours ea day. In saying that traps all worked well and the events we where in where on time.
As a whole I am glad we came to the shoot,, to be part of history is kind of cool. The 28ga was fun to shoot as we shot it just for fun.
Brian H the Winner was in the group behind us..he shot very well congrats to him!!!! and I shot with M Wampler who Won the ladies Fitasc very good shooting young lady.
We would like to come back next year..we will see where it is going to be.
And just so you know I would tell this to Jacks face and I will post my name.. I hope this is taken in a way to help next years state shoot, not as sour grapes

Ca State warm up At Birds Landing

Once again I must saw if was a good shoot.. I loved the towers. I thought the targets where more challenging than the shoot a few weeks before. But in all fairness I was not shooting my Krieghoff.
The only issue they had was the big tower in the open field on the other side of the railroad tracks.
The long tower shot was very good which was the 2nd target, the first target was a soft crosser that was affected by the wind and it was anywhere from 20 to 80 yards away.. So the issue I have is that a good shooter may get all of the long target which is a good shot but get ripped by the wind. where as lower class shooter may miss all the long targts and get a break with the wind and walk off with the same score as the upper class without ever hitting a long target. All they would have to have done is move the 1st target in towards the shooter which lets the lower class hit 1/2 of the targets and the upper class would hit a 5 or 6 and that would be a good score. As I said it was a good shoot and will be back.

Tournaments reviews

Last weeks shot at birds landing in Ca. April 24th 2010
I always like shooting at Birds and last week was no different. Weather was to die for. Targets where all fair and hittable and no eye contests.
Some of the stands I liked where stand 12 off the little platform where there was a green full size from left to right quartering away with a blk full size coming out from the bottom right of the platform.
I always like the overheads they throw and this week they had 3 stands with them.
As much as I like shooting at Birds there a few things that I would love to see.
1st add a few more specialty targets they only have the one rabbit they could use a 90 or a battue and once in a while a 60.
2nd get away from as much quartering shots if you could. yes I know everything is hard wired so it is a wee bit hard to move some of the traps.
Having said that I am looking forward to the shoot on the 8th the Ca state warm up.

Sunday April 18th Raahauges Ca
The Place is very Green and rustic in a good way. The sporting range is up a big valley.
Lots of room to throw targets.

1st I was looking forward to shooting this shoot as I have heard good things about the place and the targets.
Yes I know the traps they use give them the helping hand in getting into the sport. But it is very frustrating when the targets are in a different spot each time.
I was a wee bit disappointed.

First the good
there where some neat targets, stand 1 was good it could have been a report pair.
The stand with the rabbit was good, fun and fair
stand 5 and 6 where both very good, but the bad thing was you could not shoot them at the same time. The true pair going up the hill was fun and way different than anything else on the course.

Now the not so good

I must say I have never been to a shoot where there was as many targets coming into the viewing shooting area of your shooting stand.
Stand 5 and 6 could not be shot at the same time.
stands nine ten eleven and twelve all had targets coming into view at one pont in time.
For me there was to many true pair, but in all fairness I see the a lot. I just am not a big believer in making the shooter shoot one target quickly and have the second target dropping
The last negative thing  I have to say is that a good number of targets where dropping ether on the second shot or both of the coming down the hills. It does not give the shooter a fair shot at the target as the wind will affect a target more dropping  with out any power.
Will I go back.. Right after the shoot I said no. But the more I think about it and with my wife and friends telling me to give it a 2nd chance.
So yes I will be back.
It is a friendly place and we will see you there for the next shoot.
